The Geologi08 short film competition hosted by Geoscience Australia invited budding school-aged geoscientists from around Australia to submit a short Earth science film based on one of three themes: Natural Hazards, Earth's Resources or Deep Earth. Over 200 students participated, with entries coming from Western Australia, Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria.
"It's great to see such a diverse range of films about Earth science from students around Australia," Dr Neil Williams, CEO of Geoscience Australia said. "The competition allowed students to explore Earth science in an exciting and unusual way. The results are very impressive, and I hope some of these very talented young people will follow a career in the geoscience field."
"The films were judged on science content and accuracy, as well as creativity and originality. We received films on a wide variety of topics from volcanos, geysers and gold mining to rock types," said Dr Williams.
This year, Earth Science Week is celebrating its 11th year with the theme "No child left inside". Activities throughout the week aim to encourage young people to get away from the television, off the computer and explore the world of science outside. Activities are taking place around Australia to raise community awareness of the Earth sciences.
The 2008 winning entires will contribute to Australia's International Year of Planet Earth outreach program and will be available on the Geoscience Australia website.
