Red carpet rolls out for Earth Science Week celebrations

11 October 2011

Australia's Earth Science Week 2011 was officially launched today by the Minister for Resources, Energy and Tourism, the Hon Martin Ferguson AM MP at a presentation to the winners of the Geologi 2011 short film competition in Canberra.

The Geologi short film competition is co-hosted annually by Geoscience Australia and the Australian Science Teachers Association, and is open to all primary and secondary schools across Australia.

Entries were received from Western Australia, Tasmania, New South Wales, Queensland and the ACT. The films were judged on their science content, creativity and promotion of the theme 'Geology and you' highlighting the role earth sciences play in our everyday lives.

Entries explored the students' view of the world around them and included films on topics such as natural hazards, earthquakes and volcanoes, geological time and the formation of our Earth.

The winning entries were:

Primary Category (Year K-6)

Winner: Wynyard: Created from Chaos by Table Cape Primary School, Table Cape, Tasmania.

Runner-up: A Volcano in Our Backyard? by Fraser Primary School, Fraser ACT.

Highly Commended: From a Rock to a Can by Summer and Troy Rees, Numeralla NSW

Junior Category (Year 7 - 10)

Winner: Red Dirt by St Joseph's Regional College, Port Macquarie NSW

Runner-up: Science Rocks by Presbyterian Ladies College, Peppermint Grove WA

"It's refreshing to see students from all over the country taking an interest in the Earth sciences," Mr Ferguson said.

"It is through these activities and a dedication to educate students about the importance of Earth sciences, particularly to Australia, that we generate the interest and plant the seed of interest to ensure today's entrants are inspired to become tomorrow's geoscientists," he said.

Geoscience Australia is hosting a number of events from 9-15 October as part of Australia's 14th year of Earth Science Week, with this year's theme being 'Our ever-changing Earth'.
