Satellite images show flood spread

In the final weeks of 2010 and into 2011 much of Eastern Australia has been inundated by some of the most widespread and devastating floodwaters ever experienced.

In December 2010 Wagga Wagga in southern New South Wales suffered extensive flooding which inundated large sections of the city and surrounding areas, resulting in evacuations from low lying areas.

The situation was similar in southeast and central Queensland where a series of tropical downpours left whole towns underwater and resulted in previously drought affected dams to rapidly fill and overflow.

The extent of the flooding can be seen in the image of southeast Queensland captured by the United States Geological Survey satellite, Landsat-5 on 28 December 2010 which shows a flood-water front 11 kilometres wide moving down-stream toward the town of St. George.
