About this DTD

The ANZMETA DTD v1.3 is a minor revision accompanying the minor review of the "ANZLIC metadata guidelines". This ensures that these two standards documents are consistent in their definition of ANZLIC spatial metadata.

The document that you are reading describes the changes that are specific to this version. The previous ANZMETA DTD v1.1 documentation is still relevant for describing the structure and rules for each metadata element and the ANZMETA DTD v1.2 documentation explains the extension capabilities and the controlled vocabularies (authority lists of valid values).

Changes

Changes between v1.2 and v1.3

• added "custodian" attribute to <keyword> element
  • to assist with documentation of Geographic Extent Names (GEN)
• added <vertex> container within <dsgpolyo>
  • to provide structure for Geographic Extent Polygons (GEP)
  • a <vertex> contains a coordinate (<long> followed by <lat>)
  • a Geographic Extent Polygon is comprised of many vertices
• optional "thesaurus" attribute for <keyword> element
  • was mandatory, now optional
• mandatory <spdom> and <distinfo> container elements
  • these were optional, which was causing inconsistency with the "ANZLIC metadata guidelines"
  • it is expected that all dataset descriptions would already have these elements anyway
• added missing entity set ISOnum.pen
• corrected the syntax for ISOlat1 entity set declaration
  • use colon (:) instead of dash (-)
• added comment that you must use Open Catalogs with your XML parser to resolve any external references
  • see the main ANZMETA documentation for discussion about the use of Catalogs for entity management
• changed declarations of entity sets to be local references because Schema.Net has removed the entity sets

Example XML documents

These non-realworld examples portray the structure of ANZMETA XML v1.3 documents.

• spatial-dtd13-7.xml
  • shows how two Geographic Extent Names are used
  • shows how attributes are used with the <keyword> element for each GEN to indicate which authority list ("thesaurus" = GEN Category), the "custodian" of that GEN Category, and the "identifer" for this GEN
  • note that the outer bounding rectangle is calculated from the extents of the two separate GENs
• spatial-dtd13-1.xml
  • because there was no official Geographic Extent Name available to describe the location of this dataset, two adjoining Geographic Extent Polygons were used
  • note that the outer bounding rectangle is calculated from the extents of the two separate GEPs

Note that both examples show that the "thesaurus" attribute for the <keyword> element is optional. However, it is preferable to use this attribute if possible (official names are defined in the ANZLIC Metadata Guidelines Version 2 documentation).

Development status

Another release of the DTD will occur during 2000-2001 in line with the review of the ANZLIC Metadata Guidelines. That will address any Page 0 issues and any common Page 1 requirements. The next revision is expected to evolve to be the Australian profile of the ISO metadata.
