Free digital data by download

NOAA data is available free of charge from the Geoscience Australia download site for acquisitions over the last seven days. The data will be removed from the download site after this time.

Data will normally be available on the download site the evening after an acquisition.

Product specifications

Scene size: Across Track - 2399 km (for NOAA-16); or Along Track - Full swath (normally over the whole country)
Pixel size: 36 arc seconds (1/100 degree)
Processing level: Map Image (map oriented, georeferenced and radiometrically calibrated)
Format: HDF website. What is HDF?
Projection: Cylindrical Equidistant
Processing software: CAPS Version 2.5
Bands: All available AVHRR bands
File: Single file approximately 100Mb in size (compressed)

Ordering procedure for download

For your first download, you are required to go to the NOAA Register page where you enter your relevant details and the purpose for which the data is being used. You must also read and agree to the licence conditions.

Upon agreement to the licence conditions, a login name and password will be generated so you can access the relevant part of the Geoscience Australia download site. This information is automatically sent to you via the email address quoted in the licence page. Your login name and password may be used for all subsequent NOAA downloads of free data.

Once you have registered to become a Licensee, the NOAA Online Data pages provide details of scenes from the last seven days available for download. These pages may be viewed at any time, but whenever a file is selected for download, your login name and password must be provided to effect a successful download.

There are two ways to download data:

• FTP - requires ftp client software (which may permit regular automatic download)
• HTTP - uses your current browser to download the file.
