The city of Lithgow is located to the west of the Blue Mountains National Park in New South Wales. These images were acquired from the Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper sensor. True and false colour images for both a recent (2010), and an older (1988) scene are available below in high resolution JPEG format.

In this false colour swipe comparison, urban areas appear as shades of cyan and purple, dry vegetation and soil as magenta to red, and forest or irrigated vegetation as shades of green. Water bodies appear dark blue to black. Housing development in Lithgow has occurred mostly in South Bowenfels in the south western corner of the town. This includes construction of the Lithgow Community Private Hospital. The Great Western Highway can be seen bypassing Wallerawang by cutting through Lidsdale State Forest to the northwest of Lithgow. These false colour images also emphasizes changes in vegetation moisture content, as can be seen by the colour change of the land south of Lithgow, with the region being much drier in January 2010.
