In this false colour swipe comparison, the extent of the urban areas of Parkes are highlighted in red. The urban expansion of the town has been in all directions, somewhat greater to the east, with residential homes now occupying land to the east of Goobang Creek. A larger business district is constructed to the southwest of town. There is also a small bushfire in progress in the 1986 image east of Parkes, with the resulting change to vegetation still evident in the 2009 image. Differences in vegetation and farming appearance between old and new images are due to changes in vegetation moisture content, due to inter-annual fluctuations in rainfall.

In these false colour images, urban areas appear as shades of red. Vegetation appears in a range of blue to green, with blue representing more irrigated or mature vegetation.
