The city of Darwin, the capital of Northern Territory, is located on Australia’s northern coast opposite the Timor Sea. These images were acquired from the Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper sensor. True and false colour images for both a recent (2009), and an older (1988) scene are available below in high resolution JPEG format.

In this true colour swipe comparison, colours appear as close as they would naturally to the human eye. Urban areas appear grey to white, vegetation in varying degrees of green and brown, and water is blue to black. Palmerston, 20km south of Darwin CBD, has seen the highest level of residential growth, particularly with the suburbs of Rosebery, Gunn and Yarrawanga. Notice the appearance of Robertson Barracks north of Palmerston, the new deepwater port of Darwin East Arm, and the significant development of Darwin Airport between images. Inner Darwin harbour has also seen new residential developments in areas such as Bayview and Cullen Bay.

	1988 Darwin false colour Landsat 5 TM satellite image Red, green, and blue hues are representing TM band’s 4 (Near infrared), 3 (visible red) and 2 (visible green) respectively Image taken on 19 July 1988 25m Resolution In these false colour images, urban areas are cyan and white, vegetation appears in shades of red, and soils or cleared land as dark to light brown. Burnt areas will appear as shades of dark green. The sand flats to the Northeast of the city also appear grey to light cyan. Notice the highlighted difference between urban developments, with business districts are harbour regions containing very little red colour, while residential areas contain a mixture of red and cyan hues.
