The city of Hervey Bay is located in southeast Queensland near Fraser Island. These images were acquired from the Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper sensor. True and false colour images for both a recent (2010), and an older (1987) scene are available below in high resolution JPEG format.

In this false colour swipe comparison, urban areas appear as shades of cyan and white. Vegetation appears as a mix of greens, browns and red. Grasslands appears as olive green, agricultural farming and soils are displayed as shades of red, and forests and overstorey vegetation as various shades of brown. Water bodies appear blue to black. Hervey Bay has expanded rapidly over the past 23 years from small beachside suburbs into a sizable coastal city. New waterfront areas include Craignish, Dundowran Beach, much of Point Vernon, as well as Booral and River Heads. Residential housing has likewise extended inwards to Kawungan, Wondunna and to the rural residential Sunshine Acres. New business and commercial infrastructure is concentrated around Urraween.
