The city of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia is located on the eastern side of Gulf St Vincent, and west of the Mount Lofty Ranges. These images were acquired from the Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper sensor. True and false colour images for both a recent (2009), and an older (1988) scene are available below in high resolution JPEG format.

In this false colour swipe comparison, the extent of the urban areas of Adelaide appear as shades of purple and white. Vegetation appears as light green to yellow, with drier areas appearing lighter. Water is displayed as dark blue to black. The sprawl of suburbs over the last 21 years has been mainly to the north and south, with growth to the west restricted in part by the Mount Lofty Ranges. South of the city centre many coastal suburbs have sprung up, particular around Hallett Cove and Morphett Vale. North of the centre, rural residential and industry growth has occurred in Virginia and Buckland Park, and the satellite town of Gawler has also expanded significantly. Also notice the large amount of development at Adelaide Airport west of the CBD.
