Location of Hobart, Tasmania

The city of Hobart, the capital of Tasmania is located in the southeast of the state situated on the mouth of the Derwent River. These images were acquired from the Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper sensor. True and false colour images for both a recent (2010), and an older (1988) scene are available below in high resolution JPEG format.

In this true colour swipe comparison, colours appear as close as they would naturally to the human eye. Urban areas appear grey to white, trees and grasslands as shades of green and yellow, and water bodies as dark blue to black. Hobart has seen many new riverside suburbs develop further up the estuarine north of the city centre. These include Austin Ferrys, Herdsmans Cove, Old Beach and Otago. In Southwest Hobart, the urbanisation of the river front has spread further inward to Tolmans Hill and Mount Nelson. On the east side, significant commercial development arises in Cambridge, as well as improvements to Cambridge Aerodrome. Also notice the large shipping and infrastructure upgrade to Prince of Wales Bay.
