The city of Maryborough is located in central west Victoria, approximately 170km from Melbourne. These images were acquired from the Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper sensor. True and false colour images for both a recent (2009), and an older (1988) scene are available below in high resolution JPEG format.

Maryborough Maryborough

In this false colour swipe comparison, the extent of the urban areas of Maryborough appear as shades of cyan and purple. Dry vegetation and soil appears magenta to red, and forest or mature vegetation as shades of green. Parklands and ovals appear as bright green. Water bodies appear dark blue to black. While residential growth within Maryborough has been relatively restricted by the reserves surrounding the city, new infrastructure can be seen northward along the Pyrenees Highway, and an increase in density within the city. Multiple rural residential properties also appear to the west of the city. Notice the vegetation changes within Paddys Ranges State Park. Most of the forest was burnt by a bushfire in January 1985 and this is clearly evident in the 1988 image, with the red to magenta areas within the park. However over the next two decades there has been prolific regeneration of the forest, noted by the dark green colour of previously burnt areas.
