The cities of Kalgoorlie and Boulder are located in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, approximately 600km northeast of Perth. These images were acquired from the Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper sensor. True and false colour images for both a recent (2010), and an older (1987) scene are available below in high resolution JPEG format.

In this false colour swipe comparison, the extent of the urban areas of Kalgoorlie and Boulder appear as shades of purple. Dry vegetation and soil as brown to red, and denser vegetation as shades of green. Parklands and ovals within the city appear as bright green. Water bodies appear dark blue to black. Expansion of the city occurs mainly to the west in Somerville, Victory Heights, Broadwood and West Kalgoorlie. This also involves the relocation of Kalgoorlie Airport, just south of Victory Heights. To the north, residential areas of Hannans and Lamington both increase in size. Also quite noticeable is Fimiston Open Pit Mine i.e. the Super Pit can be seen appearing from the collection of smaller mines on the town’s east.
