Solomon Islands 2007 Tsunami
The following images show possible regional changes following the tsunami which struck the Solomon Islands on 2 April 2007. (Gizo Island at centre of image) Various pre and post-tsunami images may be viewed using the selection box below each image. Pre tsunami images were captured between October 2006 and March 2007. Post tsunami images were captured on 7 April 2007.
The main population centre is on the eastern tip of the island, best seen using the AVNIR-2 images. The post-tsunami AVNIR-2 image was acquired using a large off-nadir look angle, thereby slightly reducing the spatial resolution. While it is difficult to see specific differences between pre and post-tsunami images in these examples, the images do provide a useful spatial context for the disaster area.
Thanks to the Sentinel Asia Project and JAXA for their assistance in acquiring post tsunami images.
