Sydney is the largest city in Australia and host to the Year 2000 Olympic Games.
The city occupies all the land suitable for urban development between the dissected sandstone plateaux of the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park in the north and the Royal National Park in the south. Suburbs are spreading to occupy the plains to the west, with corridors to Penrith and Campbelltown.
As well as its important commercial and service role, Sydney is Australia's major industrial centre. Together Sydney Harbour and Botany Bay make up Australia's busiest port. The highly-valued views of Sydney Harbour and rapid development have combined to create the highest property values in Australia.
