Darwin is Australia's most northerly capital, on the northwest coast of Australia. It is named after the famous scientist Charles Darwin.
The city was rebuilt after being almost totally destroyed by Cyclone Tracy in 1974. It is regarded as the tropical capital of Australia with a distinctive hot wet season and slightly cooler dry season. Because of this seasonal contrast, much of the natural vegetation is low, scrubby savanna woodland.
Darwin has grown rapidly in the last two decades and is developing important links with its Asian neighbours.
