The growth of Adelaide has been slower than that of other mainland capital cities, attracting fewer recent migrants from interstate and overseas.
The city is built on a plain between the fault scarps of the Mount Lofty Ranges and Gulf St Vincent. This plain tapers towards the south where the city spills over the hills, incorporating Noarlunga into the metropolitan area. Growth is focused on the corridor to the north through Gawler.
The most favoured area for living is the Mount Lofty Ranges, east of Adelaide, where the climate is less harsh in summer than in Adelaide.
