Marine Greenhouse Gas Monitoring
Deploying a sediment coring piston

Geoscience Australia is investigating techniques for the detection of greenhouse gas seeps in marine systems. During 2011, Geoscience Australia took part in a collaborative research project with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (Institute of Ocean Sciences) off the coast of Vancouver Island with the aim for trialing sampling techniques for offshore gas detection in sediments. The gases were analysed for composition and carbon 13 (δ13C) and deuterium (δ2H) isotopes at Geoscience Australia’s Isotope and Organic Geochemistry Laboratory. During 2012-13, Geoscience Australia will be field-testing a new continuous PCO2 instrument before deployment in future marine surveys.
