National Flood Risk Information Program
Geoscience Australia has responsibility for developing and implementing the National Flood Risk Information Project (NFRIP). NFRIP will include the development of a flood risk information portal, standards and guidelines for flood risk information and the mapping of flood extents from 30 years of remote sensing imagery.
NFRIP will align closely with the National Flood Risk Information Program which also aims to improve the quality, availability and accessibility of flood risk information in Australia. The National Flood Risk Information Program, through a number of associated activities, will improve flood risk information designed and implemented by local, state and territory and Australian governments over an extended period of time.
The program will develop in collaboration across all levels of government a platform in which the information generated by the program is held online, including guidelines, standards, program information, community education resources, and publications.
NFRIP is not intended to overlap with the Bureau of Meteorology’s (the Bureau) role under the Water Act 2007. Here, water information means:
- any raw data, or any value added information product, that relates to:
- the availability, distribution, quantity, quality, use, trading or cost of water; or
- water access rights, water delivery rights or irrigation rights; or
- any metadata relating to data of a kind referred to in paragraph (a); and includes contextual information relating to water (such as land use information, geological information and ecological information).
The information collected by the Bureau is an important input to flood studies and provides valuable historical data to support accurate flood studies. NFRIP will be in close collaboration with the Bureau.
