The Queensland Tropical Cyclone Consultative Committee provides advice to the Queensland State Disaster Mitigation Committee on measures to mitigate the adverse effects of tropical cyclones on Queensland communities. It provides guidance on disaster mitigation research, policy development, disaster risk assessment, mitigation measures, community preparedness and post-disaster assessment in relation to tropical cyclones.

The Queensland Tropical Cyclone Consultative Committee ensures the incorporation of the ongoing work on commitments and recommendations of the Council of Australian Government's Review of Natural Disaster Relief and Mitigation Arrangements (2002) into its strategies and projects.

Geoscience Australia works with the Queensland Tropical Cyclone Consultative Committee to establish national risk assessment methodology for tropical cyclones, in support of the implementation of a consistent system of risk assessment models and methodologies to ensure a sound knowledge base in relation to tropical cyclone mitigation, tropical cyclone events and post-event assessment.
