Sarah - 2011 Graduate

I completed a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Adelaide majoring in Geology and Geophysics.  Initially, I started a degree in Ecochemistry but soon realised that a career in geology offers opportunities to resolve curiosities about the world we live in, influence the future of resource extraction and utilisation, as well as travel to interesting and remote places. During my undergraduate studies I went on field trips to Central Australia, the Flinders Ranges, New Zealand and India. I also spent some time working as a student geologist in a South Australian gold mine.

My interest in geothermal energy led me to undertake an Honours project studying the Eastern Ghats Mountains in India and their implications for geothermal exploration. During my first graduate rotation here at Geoscience Australia, I am looking at how the geothermal, carbon capture and storage and coal-seam gas industries might impact on water quality in the Great Artesian Basin.

I was attracted to the Geoscience Australia Graduate Program because I liked how it offered me the opportunity to apply my geological knowledge to research which has an impact on Australia and its future direction.
