Tegan Kelly
Pursuing a passion for natural history, I completed a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in earth science and zoology at the University of Tasmania. At the end of the third year of my degree I completed a Summer Research Scholarship in Quaternary geochronology at the Australian National University (ANU) which later led to an Honours project in the Research School of Earth Sciences at ANU. My Honours project involved looking at the chemistry of fossil animal teeth from a Neanderthal hunting site in France, to discover information about Neanderthal hunting strategies.
I then undertook a PhD with the same research group at ANU using the geological techniques of geochemistry and geochronology to study ancient environmental conditions at an Australian archaeological site, near Lake Mungo in the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area.
I was attracted to the Geoscience Australia Graduate Program because I could further develop my skill set and experience by working on different research programs during various rotations throughout the graduate year. I also liked the idea that the research I do here will contribute to informed decision making that will actually make a difference for Australia.
My first rotation has been with the Groundwater Group doing a time series analysis of satellite imagery of arid Australia as part of the Palaeovalley Groundwater Resources Project.
