New maps and data

The following table contains new topographic/thematic maps and GIS data released since May 2008. Click on the Geoscience Australia catalogue number link for further product information.

A full listing of currently available topographic maps at 1:250,000 scale, 1:100,000 scale and 1:50,000 scale is also available.

Now available - NATMAP Digital Maps 2008 (formerly NATMAP Raster)

Geoscience Australia's 1:250 000 scale digital map (Raster format) product NATMAP Digital Maps 2008 is now available on DVD ROM.

The new version includes:

• new transition layer tool that allows one map or satellite image to be viewed over another
• new split screen view
• updated 1:250 000 UTM zone maps, mosaic of Australia map and Landsat 7 satellite image
• improved operating system including Vista and Internet Explorer 7 compatibility
• updated place names.

Upcoming maps and data

To fulfill demand for geographic information Geoscience Australia is continuously updating our topographic maps and data and developing new products and services. The forward program outlined below describes our plans for revising the most significant products and services over the next few years.

Geoscience Australia is dedicated to meeting the targets identified in this forward program as well as the priorities set by our customers and stakeholders, including implementing the Commonwealth policy on spatial data access and pricing. We therefore welcome your feedback (mapfeedback@ga.gov.au) to help us evaluate our forward program against the needs of our customers.

Maps and data currently under development or revision include:

1:250 000 scale (1:250K) topographic NATMAP maps and GEODATA

The following maps are currently being revised. These maps are expected to be completed by July 2009 and this will complete the current revision cycle for 1:250 000 scale maps.

NATMAP topographic maps (1:250K)

NATMAP topographic maps and GEODATA Lite production (1:100K)

GEODATA Lite 100K is a vector representation of a selection of Australia's topographic features at 1:100 000 scale. It is GIS compatible, nationally consistent (although not national coverage - select areas available only), comprehensively documented and regularly maintained. GEODATA Lite 100K will be useful to users that require a level of detail and spatial resolution exceeding that available with 1:250 000 scale data.

Reference maps

NATMAP's popular reference maps (including the wall map of Australia) will be updated with current information. Additional information on climate, road distances, and fabulous facts about Australia are planned for inclusion. Satellite imagery and elevation/hillshade information will also be included on some maps.

Australian Territories map series

Maps of Norfolk Island, Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands are currently in production.
